Do Something Different

16/02/2009

With the downturn of economy for so many countries, my own nation is not spared. Some companies which have been overstretched have to close down.

But then there are those who do austerity drives. And somehow they weather the time. I know of a few like that in the last downturn. They cut and trim and become lean and mean. But they make it through.

One thing that they ought not cut from their budget, though, is advertising. They should maintain that, with a touch of humour, a touch of panache and they’ll find that they will stand out. This need not be costly. And when they conduct a sale with plomb and confidence, you can be sure that the customers will take note! In this way, the cost of advertising would be recovered.

I know this to be true from personal experience!

Advice Needed

15/02/2009

I have another site which I regularly update (actually I have a few!)

There is a counter there which tells me that I will soon be hitting 20,000. I’d like to do a giveaway for that 20,000th person.

The problem is, how?

Do I teach my readers how to do a screen capture and then use that as evidence? How can I monitor that people don’t refresh the screen and thereby change the number? Is it possible to monitor at all?

Anyone out there who can help?

Losing It!

14/02/2009

No, not my senses! My mind is perfectly all right!

I’m referring to the plague of many woman as they reach the middle age. Since I passed middle age a while ago, it seems like I need to fight this on a daily and meal-by-meal basis!

In case you haven’t worked it out, I am describing my on-going battle against the bulge. And what a battle it is!

Then, during my time of “weight yo-yoing”, I was introduced to some weight loss products. Most timely!

Now perhaps I can stop talking about it, set my mind to it and really get down to seeing some results! Yes, I think I will set my mind to getting into an old but dear dress that I have. That, togther what I have found out, will not only give me incentive, but surely also the desired results!

Let the battle commence again!

Surprise!

14/02/2009

It had been such a hectic week. It was going to be even more busy the week ahead. A new job comes with its challenges, but I was nonetheless feeling a little like Elastic Woman – except I wasn’t invincible!

My back began to hurt. I was beginning to think that perhaps I should get trainers for my work shoes due to all the walking I was doing. You know, throw away my high heels (Gasp!)

My body complained as I help to lay out 90 chairs for a meeting. I am no spring chicken. Then as I went home, my right foot cramped – driving was not easy!

Sleeping late didn’t help. Worse when you have to wake up early to do the school round. Even more complicating is if your sleeping partner decides to stir you up with an audio blast at 3am!

Yes, that bad.

Then we got home from a night meeting. As we settled for a good rest, he quietly showed me a small red case and asked, “Do you think our daughter would like this?” (Gasp again!) Inside nestled a lovely butterfly shaped pendant, glistening as it reflected the lights overhead. I murmured how beautiful it was.

Then he continued by giving me another case – a small gold coloured one. Inside was a pearl pendant, exquisitely decorated, on a lovely slim shiny chain. (Gasp and gasp again!)

I was speechless. For a change.

What a surprise !

Later as we prepared to fall asleep, I contemplated how despite my hectic, full, frentic schedule, it still felt manageable, especially when a loving Hubby is around to support… even is he snores!

And now, I have to end my post – my foot is cramping up again!

SHE WON!

Photo

FINALLY! Here is the announcement that many have been waiting for!

BUT before that, let’s drag this out a bit…. Let’s talk about the PROCESS of how this was done!

No, I didn’t do anything dramatic like making lots of little strips to throw into the wind so that the birds could use the leftovers to make their nests, as Ketutar from Finland suggested.

No, I didn’t use any fancy stuff.

No, I didn’t pick my best friend out.

No, I didn’t ask my daughter to pick a number.

I asked my SON instead! Haha! My daughter was fast asleep….

He picked this lady! How did he pick her? He fancied a number and called it out! It would appear that she is from Hawaii – How exotic! This is what she says about herself -

“My mama always called me Cetta.(pronounced Chetta), which is the italian pronunciation of my full name (Concetta) which i always hated…i mean i only read it in obituaries when old italian women died…i never knew how to pronounce it – my parents both said it different….and it got tiresome when people struggled over what to call me….Cheddar, Consh*t, you get the picture. But now I’m all grown up (hah!), so I look at it as unique…and besides, it reminds me of my mama!”

Now I hope she will get in touch with me soon!

Getting Fit Safely!

12/02/2009

A week ago, I posted about my friend who was going to climb Mt Kinabalu. She found out recently on a trip abroad that her stamina wasn’t as good as she thought. So she is intensifying her training! She’ll need to work hard because she only has a few weeks more. But she is also concerned that she will over-do. I can understand that having climbed that peak before!

I found out something that might help her though. (In fact, I learned a new word in the process!) I discovered that ellipticals are the best thing that she could use for her preparations now! Yes, these wonderful machines are great because she will be able to use them rain, sun or shine at her leisure, in her own home! Further, these stationary exercise machines will help her to train without heavy impact and so is safer than training on roads!

Now I must send her an email and ask her to check these out!

Less Than 24 Hours

11/02/2009

As I post this, the clock is ticking away….

In a little while, I will be closing the One World One Heart giveaway here and at my other site. The response has been beyond my expectations! The original site has over 800 participants, and it is impossible to visit that many sites, although I myself have been to almost half of them. What an interesting event this is turning out to be!

Soon, however, I will be picking the winners. I havent decided yet how to do this – should I let my daughter pull the winner? How about my cat putting her paw on the name? Should I draw numbers? Or put names down? What other options do I have? Maybe I should just scroll my mouse and stop randomly, and point blindly at the screen of my computer! Oh wait, wait! I know! I’ll print out the names on a list, ask my daughter to cut them and then toss them in the air (Can you imagine the sight!) Then as they flutter down, either she or I will snatch one out from thin air! Now THAT’s what you call picking out a winner!

Oh wait…. who’s going to clear up after?

Ah well…. I’ll let you know what happens!

Happy Birthday Mom!

10/02/2009

My daughter has to do a school project about our family history. The teacher wants something interesting (read spectacular) and history-making (read newsworthy).

Well, my Hubby and I haven’t lived long enough to do anything like that (honestly!) His mother was an orphan so not much there. His Dad was one of two siblings overseas and neither are alive anymore. Another deadend.

That left just my side of the family. (Poor girl hasn’t got much fodder does she!) Since today is Mom’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMMMM!) I thought it would be a good idea to feature these two important people.

Well, for starters, Dad was  King’s Scout. That shows how ancient he is. He actually owns a certificate signed by King George. It’s all framed up. He met Mom when the first kangaroos came to Malaysia and he was supposed to help to crowd manage. At least I think that’s what they told me! Mom was a Girl Guide and a good looking one too. So Dad was distracted from his work and he foxwhistled Mom (OK, I’m biased but I’ll put some photos up later… after I get her permission!) And so their romance blossomed.

I grew up singing camp fire songs like “She’ll be coming round the mountain when she comes”, wondering who would be visiting and why was she singing and doing all those silly things…. (to be continued)

Youths + Fireworks =?

09/02/2009

Put a few young men together. Let them loose with a variety of fireworks.

They explore!

They used roman candles in tubes to “bazooka” where they wanted.

They pointed the tubes of fireworks using a white tube.

They larked around and got more lazy…

Phew! Then we had this.

fireworsThis is a firework set off in one of the dogs bowl! What creativity!

The State of Silver

08/02/2009

Perak is the Malay word for silver. In Malaysia, there is a state called Perak – hence, the silver state.

OK a quick history lesson here. In Mar 2008 federal and state elections, Perak became Opposition rule, ie not National Coalition, just as four other states – Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan, Wilayah Persekutuan. This was a real shock to many because apart from Kelantan, the rest had been under the National Coalition. These were results that shook the nation.

In Perak, the majority was a very slim one. Nonetheless, they had enough to form the state government, being a coalition of parties under the Opposition’s Coalition.

Recently, two of their state representatives were investigated for corruption. Their cases are due to be mentioned in court next week. These two reps suddenly disappeared from the scene last week.

Rumours began to surface that they were going to change parties and support the National Coalition or go independent. A third rep also began to show signs of doing similarly. That would mean that in the ruling Opposition Coalition would be tied with the National Coalition for seats, with 3 independents.

The Perak Chief Minister went to see the Perak Sultan (king) to ask for dissolution of state parliment and to call for snap elections to allow the people to decide who they wanted to vote for and to stop the stalemate.

However, the Sultan, instead of listening to the CM, which is the normal convention, chose to wait for the appearance of the present VPM (and incoming PM) who is also VP and incoming P of the National Coalition. (Have I lost you?) They had an audience and then the Sultan decided to demand for the Perak CM’s resignation. Failing which, he would declare the CM post vacant.

Many have cried out that this is illegal. It is a sign of the times that even the news report covers this.

To cut a long story short, the debacle of politics in Malaysia continues even as I write. Apparently the Sultan’s website is filled with people writing in their protests and on Tuesday, I gather, there is a call for people to wear black if they disagreed with what has happened.

Stay tuned for next instalment, or just do a search. With what I have written above, you should be able to follow the news.
