Stripes

17/11/2011

Arrow #3 agreed with me when I said that her room needed a new coat of paint. A faded shade of purple, it was not very bright nor cheerful. So I proposed a project – we would paint the room together!

It brought back memories of when I used to paint our room as we grew up. There was another time we painted the gate and my little sister fell into the drain, but that’s another story!

Back to this one!

So Arrow #3 and I decided to go on this project together. Of course, being the “pro” that I was, I decided we didn’t need to measure the walls. Just go along and estimate the amount of paint needed.

I did so, and I was right. Except that it was only enough for one coat of paint. The underlying purple was still showing. So back we went to get more paint.

Then because she wanted stripes and Momma here didn’t want to get wallpaper for it, and of course it would be fun to teach her to use the spirit level, etc, we decided to paint the stripes on. Well, what we didn’t reckon on was that the masking tape wasn’t enough! So we needed MORE tape as well.

Having said that, mission accomplished after two days of work.

And Arrow #3 is more than satisfied.

As is Momma! (Aches and pains aside)

Doors

27/10/2011

Our house Bethany. At least this is the view from the gate.

The entrance is to the left where we have a white main entrance door. White because we think it is cheerful. However despite it being a double door and therefore wide, I notice that people have a tendency of somehow scraping their shoes on the door and thereby leaving marks before they enter. We often ask them to take their shoes off (the Asian culture) inside the house (the non-Asian way) because of the neighbourhood four-legged canine who loves to hop over and take what is not his! Anyway, we have decided perhaps we need door kick plates to avoid the scuffs and stains.

Rustic

16/10/2011

All that talk about D-I-Y, well let me just say that whilst our home is up on a hill with very rustic design, it is not quite a log cabin up in the mountain. Most visitors are thrilled with the little patch of jungle out our back yard which we have deliberately left wild and untouched.

Here’s a view from the bottom of the garden. We have friends who come by to have tea and sit at the balcony….

Squirrels, monkeys, pheasants, birds, bees, butterflies are all welcome.

Hmm actually, putting some log cabin furniture in would be a fine addition to increase its rural look.

D-I-Y

Tried doing some DIY in the house lately. I was fixing up bathroom shelves and curtain rods! (Yes, I have laid carpets and made shelves before too!) Here is the shelf I put up in Arrow #3′s bathroom Ahem!

Of course I can’t do everything I’d like to in one day. One of the many things I have not got around to is to attack some dodgy cupboard doors. They are not sliding open and close well at all. I think that perhaps some new and heavy duty casters may help – These are really heavy sliding doors.

On second thoughts, being such huge doors, I guess I will call in the professionals this time….

Oooeeerrr

They seemed to appear out of the blue. One moment there are lots of leaves and foliage. The next moment there appears this brown muddy looking thing.

A hornets’ nest!

The picture on the left is where the strong winds blew on it and some parts broke off.

The very next day, the entire hive/nest is totally repaired. Scary.

I plan to call the fire brigade. They will come and attend to its disposal at night. Hornets can’t see then. Smoke ‘em and then spray ‘em….

Helpful on Rainy Days

27/09/2011

Perhaps I am just being pampered. Especially when it rains. I loathe the palaver involved when I get home.

I drive up to the gate of the house. It’s pouring cats and dogs (it would be considered a storm in England, but here, it’s the norm!)

I have to dig for am umbrella in the car. Then, maneuvering it open, I struggle with lashing wetness and strong winds that render the brolly useless.

Striding to the gate as quickly as the puddles allow,I  fumble to open the latch of the gate and then push the heavy iron contraption open.

That part completed, I run back to the car, whip the door open and somehow close the umbrella, stick in somewhere in the car, slam the door shut, take a big breath and put the car in gear.

For these reasons above, I am so very thankful for this little contraption.

Behold, the motor for the electric gate. Finally fixed and my life is made a lot easier, especially on rainy days!

Continuing Good Health

23/07/2011

We drink water everyday. We need it in ample supply for good health.

Most of us take our water from the tap, boiled or otherwise. But when you think about it, there are miles and miles of pipe feeding this water came to us. Some if these pipes are decades if not more than a century old! We don’t even know if the water treated is actually as safe as claimed it to be because on certain days we can see sediments!

So we are now trying out a filter that does reverse osmosis. We’d rather be safe than sorry especially when we have young children visiting at times.

House Care

19/03/2011

My thoughts inadvertently and surely understandably turn to our own house when I see houses collapsing like matchboxes in the wake of the recent earthquakes and tsunami. I am so glad that the building is strong and well grounded despite being on a slope. In the past 3 years we have stayed there, we’ve not notices any cracks in the plaster or any shifting at all!

What we did detect however was a problem with the basement. Well it’s not a big problem. We live in a three-storey house where one side of the basement wall is built out of the side of a hill. We discovered that we had basement moisture . Thank God we noticed it before the construction was completed. So the contractor put in a layer of waterproofing and our problem was solved! Phew!

Strength in Such Times

17/03/2011

It’s the news of late – earthquakes and tsunami. Did you see it? Were you as horrified as I was? Incredibly surreal pictures and videos. I have never seen homes being moved like what I have seen on TV screens. The sheer force of the earth movements and the water made buildings, vehicles and huge sections of land and life seem like toys and paper mache – absolutely no strength to withstand. I could not help but wonder if those buildings moved by torrents of water would have stood if they were metal buildings rather than wooden ones.

Did you have friends, relatives, dear ones in the affected areas? I did. Waiting in suspense was not easy. I was so glad that I had the comfort of being able to turn to the Lord in prayer and hear news of the safety of those close to me. At the same time, my heart goes out to those who still haven’t heard. I pray for them to have strength….

Making Space for More

19/01/2011

I kid you not. This was my living room over Christmas.

As you can see, the Christmas tree is in the corner. There are two sofa beds in the living room and they were well utilised. Even the other normal settees were not left unused. One person even slept on a mattress on the floor!

It made us seriously consider if we should get more beds! If we did, then we would probably try to go for something more in keeping with the earthy woody effect we have in the interior of our house. Something like the wooden cabin beds would be nice. They would definitely enhance the warmth ambiance!

Now my only problem would be where to put them!
