Sign of the Times

03/01/2012

We go for breakfast in the local shop. All around, people are coming in for the same.

They enter the shop and find their table.

Seated, they look to place their order.

Orders placed for food and drink, they then do this.

They check their messages and emails before they engage in conversation with the person seated in front of them…..

Traveling Aches

22/12/2011

After the mad rush and run-up to Christmas, we are now rushing around to get ready for our holiday break. I wonder how much of a break it will be, seeing that there are still things to sort out and a few events to keep in view.

Furthermore, we have a few stops to make between now and here and our final destination. Already Arrow #3 is concerned about having bad nights of sleep and hard pillows…. We are tempted to take some comfortable bedding with us, you know, like those custom mattress which one can get. Arrow #3 is wondering if perhaps we could order ahead.

Hmmm I thought I was feeling my age and aches. Not a young thing like Arrow #3!

Carrying Things

12/12/2011

Sigh. Hubby is traveling a lot these days. I hope he won’t need to travel during the Christmas period. He’s been hopping onto and off planes so much that he now needs new carry-on and check-in bags. He is also considering an aluminum briefcase as the normal cases aren’t as robust.

Reminds me of the briefcase that we saw in the movie recently. I wonder if he fancies himself as a kind of Tom Cruise. I think they are about the same height! Haha!

Looking Good

08/12/2011

It’s coming to the year end, and my good-looking, head-turning third Arrow is preparing for prom night. The task of getting a suitable dress falls on Mom of course. I am normally a lousy shopper where clothes are concerned. This time, however, it might be reasonably easier as Arrow #3 is quite certain that Sherri Hill prom dresses set the standard for her. I hope Hubby is as thankful when he sees the prices! Still, anyone would look good in these creations!

The Right Selection

05/12/2011

What a heated discussion we had over dinner! Almost as hot and steamy as the dinner itself!

The topic? Why, the Apple ipod of course. It seems to have taken over the world! What used to be Sony Walkman being synonymous with music now it is ipod. What the ipod touch 8g does is even better. It acts as music & video machine, social network communicator, gaming equipment, internet surfing, emailing, maps, and everything else except perhaps it does not feed you.

Aromatic?

27/10/2011

Went for dinner and in the midst of a spoonful heading to my mouth, I caught a whiff of it. The unmistakable smell of…. cigar smoke! The aroma is so very unique. Surprisingly for a non-smoker, I find this is one smoking habit which is pleasant for the bystander.

Having said that, there is much I don’t know about. For instance, the varieties. I never knew that there were so many varieties, such as the black & mild type!

Hubby was given a Cuban cigar on the occasion of the birth of his Boss’ first child. Being a non smoker as well he didn’t know what to do with it. So he left it lying on my office desk, (mine, because I suppose he knew I didn’t mind the smell) Alas, he didn’t know that it cost a fair bit and it was …. just left there…..

Popping Up

21/10/2011

It’s only October and some shops are already talking about the year end sales. What with Deepavali and Hari Raya and Christmas all fighting for attention, there is stiff competition!Pop up cards and displays are now the rage to try catch our attention. Creatively done and eye catching, they do succeed.

Then there are the road shows and exhibitions which some major organizations such as hotel use. At such times, a pop up booth is indispensable. Easily carried around, a snap to set up, and a good design of a good product/service will surely make the time spent on the road worthwhile!

Dangerous Spending….

19/10/2011

Going on a spending spree just will not do. All that musing about getting a new laptop can be infectious. I found myself window shopping at clothes! Window shopping in itself is all right. The danger was that I was doing it for hours – time I could ill afford! Not to mention had I purchased even half of what I tried on!

I can’t imagine how it must be for those who don’t just look but have to get. Right now, it looks like we are heading for a double dip recession. Most are hoping for the recession to have bottomed out and that the economy is on the rise again. But I have to say that the signs are not good. Judging by all appearances, we are heading for another bottom before relief will come for many who are currently in desperate financial situations.

Many caught in this spiral will be burdened with debts, often through usage of credit cards and loans. And yet they would go shopping for more. These need to seek debt advice AND implement the advice before they sink even lower!

Rustic

16/10/2011

All that talk about D-I-Y, well let me just say that whilst our home is up on a hill with very rustic design, it is not quite a log cabin up in the mountain. Most visitors are thrilled with the little patch of jungle out our back yard which we have deliberately left wild and untouched.

Here’s a view from the bottom of the garden. We have friends who come by to have tea and sit at the balcony….

Squirrels, monkeys, pheasants, birds, bees, butterflies are all welcome.

Hmm actually, putting some log cabin furniture in would be a fine addition to increase its rural look.

Hiking Climbing

12/10/2011

Whilst away, we did a lot of walking. It’s not known as the Highlands without reason!

Of course, it wasn’t as bad as when Hubby and I climbed Mt Kinabalu. When Hubby and I went to try scale the highest mountain in our country, we needed help, which thankfully came in the form of some trekking poles. Subsequently, my hubby bought two for our walking exercise. Then we found another use for them – they help to keep dogs in the neighborhood at bay too! Dogs here aren’t like those in the west.

Recently cousins from the USA came and borrowed them when they tried to climb the same mountain. Yes indeed, these poles have been put to good use.

Alas, one of the poles didn’t fare too well after their use. Hence Hubby thinks that perhaps we should have a look at something new we have discovered – Leki Poles - when we need replacements. They might last longer!
