A Gift

01/02/2012

It is customary during the Chinese New Year that the married folk give gifts to the unmarried. Called the ang-pow, or red packet, it is the norm which all children look forward to. In some cultures, parents will still give to their married offspring. Mostly however, over time, it is the grown up children would give to their parents.

This year, after thirty years of marriage, surprise surprise. A stranger decided to give me an ang-pow! Was I wearing my poorest, oldest looking top? Who knows? It’s not much, and quite fun!

Being More Ready

01/02/2012

February is upon us! Where did January go!

The church that I attend has an anniversary celebration in the middle of the year. That’s not too far away now! For us, this event in some way even surpasses Christmas and Easter in celebrations and preparations because it is a day of giving. This year, however, instead of the usual gifts we which give away, I am wondering about anniversary gift baskets. I will need to convince the people in charge!

Creativity Creates Calm

23/01/2012

When I am undergoing stressful times, one way I soothe and find peace is to do something totally unrelated to work, with a pleasing final result. It used to be making cards. Then I sometimes get asked to do hampers. Now, however, I have been introduced to the craft of doing custom floral arrangements. Now, before you ask me to show you some photos, let me first stick in my disclaimer – plants often die on me. I am not sure how far this hobby cum de-stressing activity will hurt the flowers more than help me!  One day soon, I hope to have displays that I would dare to give away…!

More Thought About Gifts

23/12/2011

What with gifts for the nephews sorted out, what about littl’ sis and sis-in-law….? I need something pretty but portable because I have weight allowance limits. We’re traveling budget air to get there. And because it’s a kind of family get-together on Boxing Day so I cant possibly go empty handed….

Hmmm how about some beadaholique gemstone beads? That might be quite novel and easy to take. They would certainly look pretty on my relatives. Possible, possible.

Mad Rush to Year End

21/12/2011

It’s a busy, busy time. What with the musical going on and Christmas Day. Gasp. Need to do some gift shopping and don’t know what to do and where to go with the limited time that I have.

I did think about getting what I hear is the best yo yo at yoyoplay for my nephews whom we will see after Christmas. I can see them wow-ing their parents whilst competing with one another to do special displays. Will I have enough time….?!

Getting the RIght Gift

13/12/2011

Sometimes it is hard to get the right Christmas gift. Hubby always thinks that giving gift voucher is so much better to avoid giving the wrong kind of gifts that is not wanted nor appreciated. For example, for those who love gaming gamestop coupons would be just the answer. Every kind of latest games is available at that site. For someone who loves clothes, getting some vouchers from a similar departmental store would be ideal.

For me however, I like the idea of picking something out which would put a big smile on the recipient when they open it. So perhaps we will see a mixture this year….!

Hitching Season

01/12/2011

Just had news that our friends’ son is getting married. Another’s daughter is getting hitched too. Yet another’s daughter is tying the know. All within the space of months, but all to different people, on different continents. I suppose we are of THAT age…..

These news made me all sentimental and I dug out our own engagement and wedding rings. We can’t wear them right now – we have both “prospered” too much! Chubby fingers don’t go hand in hand with lovely rings.

I wonder where the couples obtained their wedding bands. I know of some really nice ones!

Learning New Skills

09/11/2011

I never knew I could do it. That is, until I watched someone and asked questions as she did it. She made it look so easy! And she did five at one go.

Asking a professional to do it would cost me a fair bit though. So when asked again to do one, I decided to have a go.

Not bad if I might say so myself! Of course, I could have done better. Perhaps with more practice.

I enjoy going to select the things I want, based on the budget I have. Sometimes I put in snacks and packet drinks too. Other times it’s mostly fruit and more fruit.

Then when I put the things in, I enjoy the challenge of arranging them in such a way that they are not only balanced in weight, but also in size and colour.

Here’s another one I did. I forgot to take a photo of one done in between these two.

Hmmmm I wonder if I could go into business doing this! Haha

Aromatic?

27/10/2011

Went for dinner and in the midst of a spoonful heading to my mouth, I caught a whiff of it. The unmistakable smell of…. cigar smoke! The aroma is so very unique. Surprisingly for a non-smoker, I find this is one smoking habit which is pleasant for the bystander.

Having said that, there is much I don’t know about. For instance, the varieties. I never knew that there were so many varieties, such as the black & mild type!

Hubby was given a Cuban cigar on the occasion of the birth of his Boss’ first child. Being a non smoker as well he didn’t know what to do with it. So he left it lying on my office desk, (mine, because I suppose he knew I didn’t mind the smell) Alas, he didn’t know that it cost a fair bit and it was …. just left there…..

Floral Fragrance

23/10/2011

Funeral services are often dreary sad affairs. But not the one I just came from. It could be described as a thanksgiving celebration. No, not because they don’t miss the deceased. Rather, it was because there is much to celebrate on his behalf. His was a life well lived. As a friend once put it, often we are wanting to stay on earth but willing to go. But as Christians, we should be wanting to go, but willing to stay.

For Christians, changing addresses like this is not a sorrowful despairing time. Rather, it is sadness full of hope.

Which is why when flowers were delivered, rather than the usual white and not so bright colours, it was a joy that the place was full of reds, oranges and yellows too. Special deliveries were made from all over. I am amazed at the distances. I didn’t know about Las Vegas flower delivery services before this. I do now, and I shall most certainly use them in future. The fragrance the flowers brought merely added to the sweet and lovely atmosphere. There were well over 50 displays. So very glad!
