Learned a new word

With my nursing and midwifery background, I don’t find long words and terminology (read medical jargon) intimidating. In fact, sometimes I find it challenging.

Take for example a new word I learned – mesotheliomaI learned that this word means a malignant form of cancer that is often caused by exposure to asbestos. Malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a lining found covering most parts of the internal organs. Not nicel.

Most people who develop this have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can put a person at risk.

I am glad that the risks of asbestos are beginning to be more readily available.

Which is good thing for someone who is working with this substance!
