I walked into a shop two days ago. I was only supposed to nip in to get some stationery, and dash right back out again.
Alas, that was not to be.
I ended up being drawn by the shop’s wonderful display and incredible array of tempting products. It was as if they were calling out to me, “ME! ME! GET ME!” and “LOOK! LOOK! I’M SO NICE!”
To add to the alluring atmosphere, many of the items on the shelves seemed to team up in one accord to create the “Get-Me-For-Christmas-Gift” look! Why, they only needed to play Christmas music for the concluding, conclusive and decisive stroke!
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am a strong advocate for the message and spirit of Christmas being all year round, not just in December. But this was different. It was as if….. as if…..
The eureka moment came as I picked up a pretty bauble. As I twirled it in between my fingers, admiring the workmanship and toying with the idea of getting out my purse, two words came to mind.
Consumerism. Commercialism.
From the depths of what’s left of my straight-thinking mind, I knew it – I was going to be conned. I was imbibing the heady Buy-Me-Get-Me-Or-Regret message without initially realising it.
But once realised it, did I succumb?
Stay tuned for the next episode!
