Home from Home

30/06/2015

When in Austria, you can either go to the countryside or stay in the town. We opted to go to Zell am See, an hour’s drive from Salzburg.

You can also have a choice of rental – apartments or condominiums is one. The other, which we much prefer, is to get a house. This one is fully equipped (towels and toiletries, dishwasher and dryer) well maintained (lovely wooden paneling inside) and in a convenient location (minutes walk to the town centre and most places)

The Hills are Alive

27/06/2015

The famous song echoes in my mind as I look towards the lovely Alps. Snow is beginning to thaw, and that simply adds to the beauty. Scenes that I have only found in magazines and on the television are now being visualised by my very own eyes. I feel so very blessed.thumb_IMG_8083_1024

The weather was perfect – not too hot and not too cold. In almost every direction I turned I saw majestic mountains crowning green pastures.

We used Zell am See as our base. This is the village where the Von Trapp Family stayed. So one evening, there was a tribute to the family. A water, laser musical. Though it didn’t last very long, it was fun, informative and entertaining. I took lots of videos and was left, like many present, wanting more.

Major changes

25/06/2015

So I planned for a trip down memory lane. It was totally unlike what I had in mind. There were so many changes to the place where I used to live.

One of the most major change I noticed was the diet. This is what the local high street fare is now. No more the local chippie (fish and chips) let alone the Chinese take-away (although I am told that the Chinese fare shop is still around albeit the other end of the road!)  thumb_IMG_7286_1024

It’s kebab, naan, samosa, and the like. There was only one butcher selling pork in the local market and the clothing stores contained an amazing array of beautiful sarees, punjabi outfits and similar cloth which could be sewn up into colourful displays of the culture now more prominent. It’s enlightening. It’s more affluent. It’s a new east end of London.

Back at our friends’ home, it’s the usual English fare – bangers and not mash, but a typical Yorkshire pudding. The vegetables are boiled and they hold their natural taste without the added rich spices that one would find the neighbours using.

thumb_IMG_7305_1024I thought I would be re-visiting the place I called home for more than a decade. Instead I found myself in a totally different world and life despite the familiar road names. This is turning out to be a real holiday – a home away from home!

A Transformed Community

At last we make the long flight to our holiday destinations! The first of two wonderful destinations, we land at London! It’s been years since I have been here; I am really looking forward to my time.

It’s summer time, so the hours are longer. That means we get to go for a walk after dinner.

Our friends take us to visit the place where the London Olympics were held. What an amazing transformation! The whole place is unlike anything we have seen before.

This is where the rowing competition was held. It looks so serene and beautiful. The place is redeemed.

All around I see flowers, cheering up the place.
thumb_IMG_7212_1024This is not the east end of London I knew. What joy! I am thrilled that there has been so much development for good. What’s more, the old structures have not been left to disrepair. The stadium is being renovated to house the local football team, West Ham. The swimming pool and arena is being well used by the residents. New and more upmarket shops are opened in the nearby shopping centre. There is so much life!

It’s a great start to the holidays and I am looking forward to more.

But first, now, it’s time to hit the bed after staying up for so many hours….

An Important Wedding

22/06/2015

One thing that will happen when I go for my holiday away will be that I will be missing a very important wedding. I know, I know – if it’s that important, why would I miss it? Well, it’s because I had booked this flight before the wedding date was confirmed! Important though, because of the people involved – Hubby and I are quite close with them, having gone through much with them. I have to sigh. Nothing can be done…

Let me tell you about this wedding. It’s going to be the most amazing one. The colour scheme to begin with is not the usual white, cream, silver, blue, or even pink. This will be themed in fuchsia, no less! Not only fuchsia, but the other colours are white and purple. Reminds me of the actual flower!

The planning began ages ago, as most wedding are apt to be these days. The couple have spent a lot of time looking for the perfect outfits, the right photographers, the best wedding and dinner venues, and of course, the absolute must-have-one-of-a-kind wedding favours. They have looked at shops and stores, and even online. Actually, there are amazing items on offer online. For instance, look at this site; I mean, check these out, great prices! I am certain that I will be missing a really special event indeed. But I am thankful that I will nonetheless have something uniquely beautiful given to me to commemorate this day.

Looking Forward

09/06/2015

One of the things I shall really look forward to is to see when I go on holiday is the wonderful display of flowers.P1150590 The bursts of colours always put a smile in my heart. I am always amazed at how creative God is. Large and small, soft and hard, single coloured hues or an incredible combination; the ever-changing size and shapes transform the landscape and views.

I can hardly wait! (This photo was taken from my previous holiday to this part of the world six years ago!)

Being Blessed!

04/06/2015

We are going to Europe! Sooooo looking forward to that! We are already arranging to meet up with friends, some of whom we haven’t met for over THIRTY YEARS. Traveling at this time of the year will be so nice. The long flight is not something I look forward to, but at least it’s in reasonable comfort and I will have wonderful company in my Hubby.

This is going to be SUCH fun! Stay tuned for more updates….
