Preparing to Paint

28/03/2020

“Do something new” we were encouraged. Well, even before the encouragement to do so, we had prepared to do so. Old folks getting down to some DIY. We have done this kind of thing before, but not at our present house. So when news came about impending restricted movement allowed, we got ready… Lots to do!

Here we are then. Two old(er) folks, going to attempt something we haven’t done in years…!

Some before and after photos in the next post… perhaps!

Soapy Solutions

20/03/2020

When you are living under government controlled movement order, working from home can require major adjustments.

Thankful for Hubby who is a whizz at experimenting and doing new things.

Here he is, making soap! Such an apt activity at this time. Each batch takes a month to cure, but already this one already looks good! Most are fragrance-free because our son prefers that. Three have my preferred and experimental scents added in. I’m already looking forward to the end of the month when I can try them out!

So how are YOU spending your time these days?

Strategy for Stiff Shoulders

10/03/2020

When Hubby stood with his back to the wall (literally) he couldn’t raise his arms up. In fact he couldn’t even lift them past 45 degrees. After years of being hunched over a desk, his shoulders and back were THAT tight and stiff.

We started going to a fitness centre a few years ago. This centre, Avakas Fitness is known for strength and conditioning. “Avakas”, in the local language means strength. Their trained coaches will put you through tailor-made, low impact, full body yet targeted workouts. For a minimal fee, each session lasts an hour. The strategic, guided exercises and movements are rarely repeated. Their knowledge of the human body’s anatomy is amazing!

Coach will watch to ensure that you don’t do the exercise wrongly – a straight leg versus a bent knee while working the arms means that a different part of the body is being worked. Often, despite having up to 10 different people working out doing 10 different activities, Coach’s eagle eyes can spot when you are taking a little longer than you should… so we don’t try to cheat (ourselves)!

Oh what improvement we have seen! I have not only grown stronger – I am more flexible. And just take a look at Hubby! He can raise his elbows to shoulder level!
P.S. It isn’t that bad! He was already done with his workout and doing some stretching when Coach decided to give him a hand.
We look forward to our next session soon…

The Days of Small Beginnings ….

02/02/2018

There is a saying:- Dont despite the days of small beginnings…. Taken from Zechariah 4:10, and a little out of context, this is a symbol of some small beginnings….
Me covering my face after a workout because … who looks good after a workout unless they have a team of make up artists and a camera rolling???

Just started going to a fitness and conditioning centre. I’ve been having such a sedentary life that I have got very unfit and flabby. To the point that I am so very tired so very easily.
I decided to finally do something about it when my son and friends opened this centre, next door to his physiotherapy centre. What a fantastic combination. Off I go then…
More posts to come as I (hopefully) make progress.

Room with a View

04/01/2018

Sometimes it is just nice to sit and be still. It’s been such a hectic few months. From multiple weddings to funerals, from Christmas plays to Christmas parties, from rehearsals to performances, from family time to work catch-ups…. It’s time to relax. Be quiet. And just chill.

What better way than to do it from a room with a view? Apart from being by the beach, or enjoying a walk in the park… sometimes I just want to hibernate. Thankful for the view I get….
Do you like what you see?

Magnet Magic

02/06/2017

There is just something about magical about magnets. Coming in all shapes and sizes, they can give much pleasure to the little ones. Learning shapes, colours, and yes, even alphabet and numbers. From there, they can even spell and make phrases.

Fridge doors are the best places to have them.  Given a good variety of good quality magnets, you can watch the children play as you mooch about nearby. Add to the magnets other materials which can and cant be stuck by the magnet, and the children will learn even more. The possibilities are quite endless!

Now that my children have outgrown these versatile entertainment, I still keep them around because they are handy for when visitors’ children come around! Yay!

This Time Five Years Ago

21/05/2017

How times flies. This time five years ago, our second offspring was graduating and giving the valedictory speech.

Today will see him having worked for five years, fulfilling his bond in this nearby country where he had gone upon accepting a scholarship. He’s going to graduate again, having done studies by night as he worked. Proud of him, his perseverance, and diligence. Thankful. Reminiscent of my time of leaving home at a young age, to study and work, and then end up staying for twelve years! I, too, celebrated my 18th and 21st birthday away from family. Thankful that he had good friends to celebrate with…..

Taugeh Tips

20/04/2017

Hubby decided to experiment. He wanted to know how to grow beansprouts. What an adventurous and curious mind he has! He’s been at it for two weeks now. And look at the wonderful result!

Even if I had not been a fan of this fast-growing vegetable he would have “converted” me! So very nice! Yumm! Especially with some fried-to-crisp salted fish!

Continuing the Music Magic!

24/03/2017

I was so inspired by the music from the youth rally two weeks ago that I got out my guitar! Old faithful. Old is an apt description. It’s over two decades old! Still looks good right? The sound is a little thin and I probably need to change the strings again. The rest of the family play on it too, though someone needs to maintain and take care of it… guess who….

An alternative, of course, is to get another guitar! If I do, then I would pass this on to the children while I use the new one. Choice-wise, I would seriously consider epiphone acoustic guitars, check it out at MusiciansFriend.com. There is such a good variety of quality musical instruments there.

Hmmmmm yet another alternative is to point the children to this site and let them get their own! After all, they can afford to get one themselves! It will be money worthwhile spent… and we will be able to make good music at home. That would be magical indeed.

Chillax

28/10/2015

Learned a new word! Chill and relax put together, becomes Chillax!

Hubby had a special gift for his birthday – a coupon for two to have a full body massage. Fantastic!

I am the one who likes the massage more, but this promised to be one that he might enjoy too. The only drawback was that a three-day notice was needed. Days went by and it became weeks. We still hadnt gone!

Then one day, on the spur of the moment (otherwise known as having a long full and shoulder aching day) he called the place and asked if they had an opening.

They did!

And off we went.

This was the first step – having a foot soak of five minutes and then having the foot dried.
IMG_1580Needless to say we had a really nice shoulder unknotted time… great way to hit the sack after. Ahhhhhh
